IPA guide

If something happens independently, it happens totally on its own: there was no help from anyone or anything else.

To be independent is to be on your own, making your own decisions and doing what you want to do. America became an independent country when it rebelled against England. Similarly, things that occur independently happen on their own. If the President makes a decision independently, no one else was consulted.
